Another celebration of dancing to great music in the season of mellow fruitfulness – what more appropriate community partner for The Well Dressed Band could there be than community fruit-harvesting innovators, Sheffield’s own ABUNDANCE project!

It should be another happy beaming, sweating, laughing, breathless, bopping evening.
ABUNDANCE will be selling drinks, but please bring FOOD TO SHARE during the interval. And if you’ve any unwanted items in good condition, why not put them on the FREEBIE TABLE for someone to take home?
Starts as soon after 7.30 as we can get enough people on the floor for the first set – so get yourselves there briskly, and away we’ll go.

Day of the Dead in Sheffield

A part of the altar with offerings of tomatoes, dried chillies and ‘pan de muertos’.

Day of the Dead or Día de Muertos, in Spanish is a celebration of life that focuses on gatherings of family and friends in remembrance of those who have passed away.

Among the traditions includes an altar which is built honouring the deceased with sugar skulls, marigolds and handcrafts, as well as photos, memorabilia, and the favourite food and beverages of the departed.

Organiser and friend of Grow Sheffield, Elizabeth Uruchurtu who originates from Mexico, said: “The Day of the Dead is beyond any doubt one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Mexico and some countries in Central America. This is a unique celebration that expresses much of our idiosyncrasy: it is the time when the spirits of our beloved ones that have passed away return to be near their families and friends, to “hear” their favourite music, to “eat” their favourite food and to celebrate the continuation of life. It is a colourful season with flowers, sugar skulls, bread, candles, incense and is a great way of remembering and honouring those that have departed; it is a celebration of life!”

The Display of the Altar celebration will take place in the Sheffield Hallam University Cantor Building, Furnival Street Sheffield S1 2NU, from October 31 at 12noon to November 3 at 3pm.

Alongside the Altar, a series of activities will be held including
talks, storytelling, video documentaries and workshops.

Launch of the pop up cafe and gardening club in Beighton

We will be holding a launch event on Friday 9 November at 1pm and there will be a free cup of tea for everyone! Thereafter the cafe will run every Friday afternoon between 1-3pm (term-time) at the Beighton TARA at 1 Rose Avenue, Beighton, South East  Sheffield. ase do come along.

Grow Sheffield, Westfield Sports College and Beighton TARA have teamed to organise a pop up cafe and gardening club on a Friday afternoon. The café will provide an opportunity for pensioners to meet up, learn and share a wide variety of food growing skills and have a cuppa served from local young people from Westfield Sports College.

The student volunteers will gain experience in running a café enterprise as well as making personal connections with older people in their community. Grow Sheffield’s experienced Community Grower will be able to show the attendees how to grow from a small pot or bucket so that everyone feels that this is something they can do – regardless of where they live or whether they have access to a garden.  The group will also have a chance to taste some of the foods in a way perhaps they haven’t before, for example,  courgette chocolate cake!

This project has been funded by Sheffield City Council’s Reducing Isolation and Lonliness Fund.

Apple pressing and cider-making Friday 2nd December

We are happy to announce that Abundance will be running their first cider-making workshop of the year. We’ll be having home-brew champion Brian Trevelyan round for a look at the best ways to produce Britain’s favourite tipple.

The session will consist of 2 parts. Firstly, we’ll be using our 35L press to make a load of juice from Abundanced apples and then we’ll have a discussion about all things cider-related. You’ll also get some juice to take home with you!
We’ll be at Hagglers Corner (586 Queens Road, S2 4DU) from 4pm using our press to make apple juice and then discussing the merits and methods of cider-making with Brian. You will get the chance to take juice home with you to ferment so please bring a suitable container eg. a demi-john or plastic bottle/milk carton. The event is free but donations are welcome. Please get in touch to book a place [email protected]
